Can’t seem to get the husband into this as much as me. I think it has to do with the fact that with some of the nappies you have to actually construct them before putting them on which is obviously far too time consuming!!! Having said that I have still not got round to making a terry towelling nappy – still seems a little scary. Grandma reckons they’re easy, Vikki reckons they are too but for someone who can’t even fold a paper aeroplane very well………..? Otherwise I’m liking the challenge, I’m getting into a routine of what nappy to use and when and how long they can be in the nappy bin before they really start to hum.
Now though, Holly is starting nursery where they provide the nappies and I don’t have a choice – when she’s there full time will it still be worth using reuseables since I won’t have regular usage or a full wash to do?

Hi Hannah! My husband liked to have 1 type of nappy to stick to! He wasn't keen on having lots of different ones to think about so I made sure we always had some that he liked available! Don't worry if you're not fancying terry squares - plenty of real nappy users never use them (although there are plenty that only use them!). The idea of a trial kit is that you are able to find out which type of nappy suits you and also which types don't suit you.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to nursery - some nurseries are making the switch to real nappies! They've worked out the environmental and cost savings and either wash them in house or use a nappy laundry scheme. It would be worth mentioning it to them to see what they think!
We are really trying to promote people using real nappies part time - just replacing 1 disposable nappy a day would save 13 bin bags of disposables going into landfill over 1 year! You can wash the nappies in with your everyday washing - just remember not to add any fabric conditioner.
I hope today has gone well and am looking forward to hearing all about it!

Sounds like you're doing well, Hannah! Have you asked your nursery if they will use cloth nappies on Holly? I know your nursery is supplying the disposables but that will mean less for them to supply and dispose of. Speaking of disposing, is there a nappy laundry service in your local area? We run a nappy laundry service in London and supply nurseries in three London boroughs. The nurseries love it because they 1) spend less on the disposal of commercial waste and 2) they usually find the children toilet train earlier which is a bonus for them. Parents love it because they don't have to supply nappies and again their children potty train earlier which means less expense for them in the long run.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps!
