Great idea about only giving the husband one type to deal with, thank you. It’s interesting how each type of nappy works – I’m beginning to have a preference; all in ones, waterproof cover included, only because Holly hates having her nappy changed and I seem to be able to make the switch quicker with this type! They do tend to take a little longer to dry though since not all the parts separate. Any ideas on that one?

The bamboo nappies are lovely and soft, even after several washes and I think they look really comfy although tend to be a bit bigger since I’m having to pad them out a little more plus they need a waterproof cover.  This nappy trial is turning out to be really great. I would never have been able to try out this many different nappies without spending a fortune! Will ask nursery what they think about using real nappies and let you know…….:)

I'm getting used to this!

Think I may have finally cracked it. I’ve been through the day without really having to ‘think’ about what I’m doing. Reusable first thing in morning, continue until going out when I keep a reuseable on if still ok and just have a disposable in bag in case. Back into a disposable for night time. After a day or so, wash on, still have some clean ones ready for tomorrow. Others on line to dry. Done.

 

Thank you for the comments on the nappy bin. Will definitely try the dry pail again with some scented oil. Had to change Holly whilst out today and it was fine to keep the reuseable in my bag wrapped up. I’ve also noticed that if Holly has a no.2 you can get rid of it without having to change the whole nappy! More saving and less hassle. Think I might try the t towelling soon……;)

Can’t seem to get the husband into this as much as me. I think it has to do with the fact that with some of the nappies you have to actually construct them before putting them on which is obviously far too time consuming!!! Having said that I have still not got round to making a terry towelling nappy – still seems a little scary. Grandma reckons they’re easy, Vikki reckons they are too but for someone who can’t even fold a paper aeroplane very well………..? Otherwise I’m liking the challenge, I’m getting into a routine of what nappy to use and when and how long they can be in the nappy bin before they really start to hum.

Now though, Holly is starting nursery where they provide the nappies and I don’t have a choice – when she’s there full time will it still be worth using reuseables since I won’t have regular usage or a full wash to do?

1 week has passed since being given the challenge to use real nappies. Ok, I have some real positives about my week and some negatives! I’ve found that when at home, using real nappies has been easy. I’ve had to find the right amount of boosters to use and get to know how long each different type will last before Holly was really wet but that hasn’t been a problem with everything to hand. I’ve found using a disposable at night since is better since I don’t seem to be able to pad Holly out enough to last till morning! But that might be Holly weeing a lot!!!!! Out and about though, I don’t have a big enough bag to take more reusables with me in case I’m caught out. I don’t want a huge bag to lug about so again, when out I’d use a disposable. Another minus is the smell of the nappies in the bin and although I’ve soaked them in solution you still have to get your hands in there to put them in the washing machine! One thing my husband was not keen on!

Lastly, I have saved money – I’ve been buying eco friendly nappies at £5.98 for a pack of 32! Ridiculous I know, but I feel like I ought to be helping the planet in some way even if it’s not helping my bank balance. I would definitely recommend using reuseables, even if at some point, being it over night or when out for the day you use the odd disposable nappy. Not just for doing your bit for the environment but it’s more convenient than you think.

Thought I’d go for it and use a real nappy on Monday night! Can’t believe my luck when Holly slept solidly for the first time throughout the night! I expected to have very damp bedlinen and baby but no, all was kept in. I have to say though I learnt my lesson during the day when I did not put enough padding in a nappy and she did get damp quite quickly. I am now on my third day of using reusables and today I have used nothing but real nappies. I have washed a load too and found that some dry quicker than others – since we’ve had brilliant sunshine today I’ve been lucky. Wonder how they would do just on my airer?

Will let you know how I get on tomorrow since Grandma is babysitting and I’m going to ask her to carry on using the real nappies!!
